Summary

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and pass。 What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow。

Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time。

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend。 Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again。 In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance。 What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow。

When The Two Rivers is attacked by Trollocs-a savage tribe of half-men, half-beasts- five villagers flee that night into a world they barely imagined, with new dangers waiting in the shadows and in the light。

Finally gave in, close to fifteen years after I started reading fantasy, and started this series。 Went through book one at my regular reading rate, ie fairly quickly。 Enjoyed the treatment of the regular tropes, appreciate the world building, but found myself skimming a few times to get ahead in the plot。 Also the lack of women POV characters so far has been annoying, however much I expected it。 Very neo-Tolkien, but obviously and evidently less than。Nothing unexpected, but still pretty solid st Finally gave in, close to fifteen years after I started reading fantasy, and started this series。 Went through book one at my regular reading rate, ie fairly quickly。 Enjoyed the treatment of the regular tropes, appreciate the world building, but found myself skimming a few times to get ahead in the plot。 Also the lack of women POV characters so far has been annoying, however much I expected it。 Very neo-Tolkien, but obviously and evidently less than。Nothing unexpected, but still pretty solid storytelling。 。。。more

Solid all around, very much enjoyed it。 First 100 pages or so were setup until the main conflict starts, slow(ish) up until that point。 The 2nd half picks up super quickly, especially the final five chapters。 Excited to see where the series goes from here, not going the way I expected。

How often do you get to enjoy a story for the first time that you know you'll cherish for years to come?Going to give a pre-emptive 5 stars to this one。 It's more of a 4 and a half stars for me at this point, but the reason it's a pre-emptive fiver is that much of what makes this book amazing is how it feels like it's setting up an incredibly epic and rewarding adventure。 If the rest of the series follows through on the enormous promises made in book 1, then this becomes an absolute five star fo How often do you get to enjoy a story for the first time that you know you'll cherish for years to come?Going to give a pre-emptive 5 stars to this one。 It's more of a 4 and a half stars for me at this point, but the reason it's a pre-emptive fiver is that much of what makes this book amazing is how it feels like it's setting up an incredibly epic and rewarding adventure。 If the rest of the series follows through on the enormous promises made in book 1, then this becomes an absolute five star for me。And honestly, I expect that I'll love the rest of the series。 I've heard the common complaints people have about Wheel of Time。 The slog, certain characters are really hard to like, etc。 And I can definitely see from this first book where those come from, but based on what was in here, and knowing that I'm a sucker for epic fantasy, I can totally see myself becoming one of the megafans of this series。There were a few things that made my eyes roll。 The very clear similarities to the storyline of Lord of the Rings took me out of the story several times (I know, I know; that was purposeful on Jordan's part。 Still removed me from the story when it happened)。 There were parts, especially towards the beginning of the story, where the prose was very amateurish ("Slowly he turned his head slow。" Seriously?)。 Thankfully though, the prose dramatically improves as the book goes on and I found myself highlighting numerous parts in the second half as perfect examples of how writers should do this or that。 But there were so many things this book does very, very well。 The lore is masterfully put together。 Sprinkled throughout at all the right parts are these references to historic events and people and places that give the world and the story an enormous and congruous feel。 And that sense of history and myth comes together in the current story being told that made it truly feel like I was reading a legend come to life。 The characters are very good。 Each one is distinctive and has their own interests and goals and vulnerabilities。 At this point with the large number of characters introduced, I don't yet have a deep emotional connection to any particular one, but each one is interesting and given such a distinctive voice that I can't think of any single character who I would call forgettable。 Finally, as mentioned, as the book goes on, the prose becomes damn near brilliant and very emotionally effective。 The prose and descriptions of the Blight up through the intense-as-hell climax was especially effective。So yeah! I'm on board。 Reading this series for the first time is a thrill。 Love it。 。。。more

。。。more

Alright, I’m going to try this series again。 My first attempt was in my teenage years and I only made it to book 6 before certain things annoyed me too much。 Eye of the World still holds up well。 It’s still a good entry to a massive series, even if some parts are totally derived from LOTR。 Worldbuilding is great and Jordan has fantastic prose。 The characters that annoy me still do, but I think maybe less so now。 The boys, at least, definitely grew a bit。

This is a book that really caught me by surprise。 People often talk about how expectations can affect their experience with a story, and this usually refers to something being overhyped。 This has been true for me, unfortunately。 But sometimes the opposite happens。 Reading this book was one such case。 I absolutely adored it despite its mixed reception from what I have seen。I will say however that I did have a good feeling going into it。 This series is Brandon Sanderson’s single biggest influence, This is a book that really caught me by surprise。 People often talk about how expectations can affect their experience with a story, and this usually refers to something being overhyped。 This has been true for me, unfortunately。 But sometimes the opposite happens。 Reading this book was one such case。 I absolutely adored it despite its mixed reception from what I have seen。I will say however that I did have a good feeling going into it。 This series is Brandon Sanderson’s single biggest influence, and he is my favorite novelist。 Furthermore, the book sets up the conflict of fate vs free will early on, which might well be my single favorite theme in fantasy。 More importantly, there’s a grim sense of realism here, knowing that Robert Jordan tragically passed away when he was so close to finishing his life’s work。 In May of this year, my favorite writer Kentaro Miura, creator of my favorite work of fiction, Berserk, passed away。 He too did not get to see his work to the end。 And like what Wheel of Time seems to be doing, Berserk heavily explores the conflict of fate vs free will, as the reader is left to wonder how much control humans really have。 It is for this reason especially that I’ve felt a strong affinity to the Wheel of Time before even picking up this first book。That aside, we are influenced by those around us, so I did have my worries, but I am glad they were for nothing (so far, this is only book one after all)。 The book mostly entertained me from start to finish, with a monstrous hook of a prologue, and an explosive ending too。 I will admit there were some sections in the middle that were less immersive since I felt I had already read similar events earlier in the novel。 The progression made sense, I just don’t think I needed to see all of it。 The worldbuilding is incredible, the story is interesting, and while only a few characters hooked me early on, the cast is good enough so far。 This book forever changed the lives of the characters we started with, and I know the real journey begins now, so I am excited。 I am especially interested in seeing where Rand and Perrin will go。 Thinking about where they started in comparison to where they ended up in this book is a sight to behold。 I look forward to reading more。 。。。more

Over 800 pages and hard to put down for even a moment。 Jordan’s writing is so amazing, astonishing, and with such brilliant world building and perfect characterization。 I totally get it now how he changed the world and the culture of fantasy writing and reading。 I can’t believe I didn’t even know about him until reading somewhere that Amazon will release this first book on film as a continuing Wheel off Time series in November, 2021。 Of course, I had to read it ASAP…。the first of many yet to be Over 800 pages and hard to put down for even a moment。 Jordan’s writing is so amazing, astonishing, and with such brilliant world building and perfect characterization。 I totally get it now how he changed the world and the culture of fantasy writing and reading。 I can’t believe I didn’t even know about him until reading somewhere that Amazon will release this first book on film as a continuing Wheel off Time series in November, 2021。 Of course, I had to read it ASAP…。the first of many yet to be devoured! 。。。more

I don't have a lot of feelings about this book。 I didn't dislike it but I didn't love it。 Since I know it's the first book of 14, I didn't expect a ton from it anyway。 The plot did get slightly repetitive and it was very much a journey/travel fantasy story and that isn't really my jam。 Characters were okay, although almost all the female characters were annoying -which is annoying -and I was indifferent to Rand, the MC。 I love Lan though and I am curious to see how everyone grows throughout the I don't have a lot of feelings about this book。 I didn't dislike it but I didn't love it。 Since I know it's the first book of 14, I didn't expect a ton from it anyway。 The plot did get slightly repetitive and it was very much a journey/travel fantasy story and that isn't really my jam。 Characters were okay, although almost all the female characters were annoying -which is annoying -and I was indifferent to Rand, the MC。 I love Lan though and I am curious to see how everyone grows throughout the series。 As with most epic fantasy, there is a lot to keep track of within the world but Jordan made it harder than it needed to with calling the same creature multiple names。 It just got confusing。 To sum up, not a lot happened and nothing blew me away but I am excited to continue the series。 。。。more

Wheel of Time - 2nd reading。 Found things that I did not remember from my first reading。 Interesting how I did not remember them。 It's good to read a story by a great writer。 Makes you want to read more by him。 Did not like all the symbols that the story had, but read through them。 Would have liked more explanation of them。 Wheel of Time - 2nd reading。 Found things that I did not remember from my first reading。 Interesting how I did not remember them。 It's good to read a story by a great writer。 Makes you want to read more by him。 Did not like all the symbols that the story had, but read through them。 Would have liked more explanation of them。 。。。more

I tried, I really did。 100 pages in, and I just。。。it's boring。 I WANTED to read a sprawling fantasy series, reconnect with my middle-school roots。 But I realize why I recall so little of this series, even though I read the first five books, which totaled about 3,500 pages: the story is all derivative of other fantasy series。 I don't hate Wheel of Time by any means。 Indeed, I'd be delighted to watch the new show based on it, and I will certainly Wikipedia the entire arc of the series。 But the tim I tried, I really did。 100 pages in, and I just。。。it's boring。 I WANTED to read a sprawling fantasy series, reconnect with my middle-school roots。 But I realize why I recall so little of this series, even though I read the first five books, which totaled about 3,500 pages: the story is all derivative of other fantasy series。 I don't hate Wheel of Time by any means。 Indeed, I'd be delighted to watch the new show based on it, and I will certainly Wikipedia the entire arc of the series。 But the time and effort I would have to put into reading something like thirteen of these books--I simply can't justify it。 。。。more

It's a linear story, well told, with some great characters。 I particularly loved the way Jordan plays with a magic system which has so much depth to it I just have to read the whole series。。。 and can't wait for the TV series to begin。 So glad I read this book。 Loved it。 What can I say? The start of my soon to be long ass journey through 14 books and a prequel, has begun。 Kind of lukewarm on this first book。 It certainly had its moments but the tropiness of it got on my nerves just a tinge。 Luckily, from my understanding, this is intentional to fit the times and grab readers of the times expectations and take off from there。 We'll see where this journey takes me。 The start of my soon to be long ass journey through 14 books and a prequel, has begun。 Kind of lukewarm on this first book。 It certainly had its moments but the tropiness of it got on my nerves just a tinge。 Luckily, from my understanding, this is intentional to fit the times and grab readers of the times expectations and take off from there。 We'll see where this journey takes me。 。。。more

I loved this。 This was everything I wanted The Wizard's First Rule to be。 It's classic swords and sorcery with a lot of depth and world building。 I was enthralled by the characters and the world and the adventure。 I love hero's journeys and traditional hero's quests and this is very much like that。 It's in the same vein as Eragon or obviously, Lord of the Rings, though it's unique and compelling enough to stand on it's own。Now I'm going to have to somehow collect all these books。 And with my OCD I loved this。 This was everything I wanted The Wizard's First Rule to be。 It's classic swords and sorcery with a lot of depth and world building。 I was enthralled by the characters and the world and the adventure。 I love hero's journeys and traditional hero's quests and this is very much like that。 It's in the same vein as Eragon or obviously, Lord of the Rings, though it's unique and compelling enough to stand on it's own。Now I'm going to have to somehow collect all these books。 And with my OCD, it's going to all have to be hardback。 Oh well, it'll be worth it。 I'm looking forward to the next book。 。。。more

I'm sorry, but this was boring。 I read fantasy books for the excitement, and well。。 there was none。If this book had been 300 pages shorter, I'm sure I would've loved it。 The repetitive, slow-as-hell writing isn't just working for me。 Reading the book felt like trying to observe something through thick, cloudy glass。 You want to see what's happening, but you can't get a hold of it。 It kinda felt like the story was being explained to me, but I'd rather see what is happening and actually be there w I'm sorry, but this was boring。 I read fantasy books for the excitement, and well。。 there was none。If this book had been 300 pages shorter, I'm sure I would've loved it。 The repetitive, slow-as-hell writing isn't just working for me。 Reading the book felt like trying to observe something through thick, cloudy glass。 You want to see what's happening, but you can't get a hold of it。 It kinda felt like the story was being explained to me, but I'd rather see what is happening and actually be there with the characters。 Speaking of the characters: I liked a few (Nynaeve, Lan), but most of them were just plain boring (Rand) or not at all fleshed out。 I couldn't really connect with them, which is definitely a deal-breaker for a character driven reader such as myself。That being said, I'm really excited about the adaptation!! The Wheel of Time turns excruciatingly slow as it weaves together incompetent writing, stale characters, shameless infodumps, foolish events, and pedestrian world building into a truly painful and tedious reading experience。 This book is a literal stain。

A friend recommended this and I am super thankful。 I love fantasy but find some books of the genre formulaic and cringeworthy。 A lot of the genre post-Tolkien feels, to me at least, like poor man’s Tolkien。 This is only a partial exception。 It is a little formulaic and some behavior is a little cringeworthy。 The reluctant hero is *OMG the chosen one* (I don’t think this counts as a spoiler as it’s obvious basically straight away), weirdly skilled at swordsmanship, and has two sidekicks with sign A friend recommended this and I am super thankful。 I love fantasy but find some books of the genre formulaic and cringeworthy。 A lot of the genre post-Tolkien feels, to me at least, like poor man’s Tolkien。 This is only a partial exception。 It is a little formulaic and some behavior is a little cringeworthy。 The reluctant hero is *OMG the chosen one* (I don’t think this counts as a spoiler as it’s obvious basically straight away), weirdly skilled at swordsmanship, and has two sidekicks with significantly less sex appeal。 His mission takes him on a journey that conveniently can’t be abridged by magic or whatever (except it turns out that there are, in fact, shortcuts), because the whole book is the journey。 Evil is on the rise but everyone is still in denial。 Alright, we all know where this is going。 But the series (at least at this stage) is still original and complex enough to make up for it。 The writing is more than adequate, in fact it is eloquent and atmospheric in places。 The characters are alright - not all very multi-faceted but decent and likeable enough。 Do yourselves a favor and skim the first two chapters。 It only gets good after that。 I almost gave up after 20 pages, but then I started loving it。 。。。more

I’ve finally found a book that’s filled the void left after I finished Realm of the Elderlings。 What a fabulous epic fantasy story。 Every element is present and seems to fresh regardless of the fact that it was probably the inspiration for a lot of fantasy books that came after。 Even though it was sometimes complicated with all the names and terminology it was still a really captivating read and a total page turner。 I’m so looking forward to the next one!

Tbh, I'd give this a 3。5 if I could, but I rounded up。 The story is slow in places with maybe a bit too much exposition that could have been done in a better way, and the writing is a bit dated (the whole man vs woman thing gets old quick), but overall it's a good book。 Tbh, I'd give this a 3。5 if I could, but I rounded up。 The story is slow in places with maybe a bit too much exposition that could have been done in a better way, and the writing is a bit dated (the whole man vs woman thing gets old quick), but overall it's a good book。 。。。more
